952 - Why do we have fingerprints, and how are they unique?

Imagine your fingerprints are like a special ID card for your body. They're unique patterns on your fingertips that help identify you.

We have fingerprints because of the way our skin grows when we're inside our mom's womb. The skin on our fingertips folds and creases in different ways, creating unique patterns of lines and ridges.

These patterns are unique because they're formed by tiny movements in the womb. Even identical twins don't have the same fingerprints, because their skin grows slightly differently.

The three main reasons fingerprints are unique:

  1. Unique patterns of lines and ridges
  2. Different spacings between these lines
  3. Tiny bumps and valleys on the ridges

This combination of features makes each fingerprint one-of-a-kind, kind of like a special snowflake – no two are the same.
