674 - What is desalination, and why is it used?

Desalination is a process that removes salt and other minerals from seawater or salty water, making it drinkable and usable for people.

Imagine you go to the beach and try to drink the ocean water. It would be too salty and not good for you. Desalination helps turn that salty water into freshwater that we can drink and use for many things.

Desalination is used in places where there's not enough freshwater available, like some islands or cities near the ocean. It also helps during droughts when rivers and lakes are dry.
