667 - What are the different states of water, and how do they change?
There are three main states of water: solid (ice), liquid (water), and gas (water vapor). Here's how they change:
- Solid to Liquid (Melting): When ice gets warm, it turns into liquid water. This happens when the temperature rises above 0°C (32°F).
- Liquid to Gas (Evaporation): When liquid water gets hotter, it turns into water vapor. This happens when the temperature rises and the water molecules gain energy to break free from the liquid.
- Gas to Liquid (Condensation): When water vapor cools down, it turns back into liquid water. This happens when you breathe onto a cold window or when clouds form.
- Liquid to Solid (Freezing): When liquid water gets cold, it turns back into ice. This happens when the temperature drops below 0°C (32°F).
These changes happen naturally in the Earth's water cycle, where water keeps moving from one state to another.
