607 - What are the effects of deforestation on the environment?
Deforestation is when we cut down a lot of trees, usually to use the land for something else. This can harm the environment in several ways:
- Less oxygen: Trees help us breathe by giving us oxygen, so if we cut them down, we have less oxygen to breathe.
- More greenhouse gases: Trees absorb carbon dioxide and make the air cleaner. Without them, greenhouse gases can build up and cause climate change.
- Soil erosion: Trees hold the soil in place, so when they're gone, the soil can wash away, causing landslides and damages.
- Loss of animal homes: Trees provide homes for many animals, so when we cut them down, these animals lose their homes and might even become extinct.
- Flooding: Trees help keep the water in the ground, so when they're gone, water can build up and cause floods.
- Less rainfall: Trees help make rain, so if we cut them down, there might be less rainfall in the area.
So, deforestation can cause a lot of problems for the environment and for animals. We should try to save trees and not cut them down too much.
