567 - What is the solar system, and what are its main components?
The solar system is a big collection of objects that orbit (or go around) a star called the Sun. The main components are:
- The Sun: The big, bright star at the center of our solar system.
- The 8 Planets:
- Mercury (close to the Sun)
- Mars
- Venus
- Earth (where we live)
- Neptune
- Uranus
- Saturn
- Jupiter (the biggest planet)
- Dwarf Planets: Smaller planets like Pluto and Eris.
- Moons: Smaller objects that orbit the planets, like the Moon we see from Earth.
- Asteroids: Small, rocky objects that float around in space.
- Comets: Icy objects that sometimes come close to the Sun and get bright tails.
That's our amazing solar system!
