415 - What are the dangers of oil spills to marine life?
Oil spills are very bad for marine life. Here's why:
- Choking: Oil can cover animals' bodies, making it hard for them to breathe and swallow food.
- Poisoning: When animals eat or lick oil, it can harm their insides and even kill them.
- Habitat damage: Oil can destroy homes of animals like coral reefs, seaweed, and mangroves, making it hard for them to survive.
- Long-term effects: Oil can stick around in the water for years, affecting animals for a long time and even harming future generations.
Some animals might even get so covered in oil that they can't move or find food, which is really sad.
