375 - How do ecosystems recover after a disturbance?

Imagine your backyard as an ecosystem. Now, imagine a big storm comes and knocks down some trees and damages plants. That's called a disturbance. To recover, the ecosystem goes through these steps:

  1. New Seeds Germinate: Seeds from other plants around start growing into new plants. These plants help fill the empty spaces and start the recovery.

  2. Fast-Growing Plants Arrive: Certain plants, like weeds, grow fast to fill empty spaces quickly. These plants help stabilize the soil so it doesn't wash away.

  3. More Trees Grow: As time passes, more trees start growing from seeds. These new trees help replace the ones that were knocked down.

  4. Animals Return: As plants grow back, animals start to return to the area. These animals help spread seeds, eat plants that might be taking over, and bring life back to the ecosystem.

  5. Eventually, Balance is Restored: After some time, the ecosystem goes back to its natural balance. The plants and animals work together to create a healthy ecosystem again.

It's like when you clean up your room – you get rid of the mess, make space for new things, and after a while, it's back to being cozy and nice.
