Natural hazards are things like earthquakes, hurricanes, floods, and volcanic eruptions that can cause damage or harm to people and the environment. To prepare for them:
- Know the risks: Learn about the natural hazards that can happen in your area and the warning signs.
- Create a plan: Make a plan with your family, including where to go and how to contact each other in case of an emergency.
- Stock up supplies: Keep a kit with food, water, and other essential items that can help you survive for a few days.
- Stay informed: Pay attention to weather forecasts and warnings, and sign up for emergency alerts.
- Practice drills: Practice your emergency plan with your family so that you're all ready in case something happens.
Some specific things you can do for each type of hazard:
- Earthquake: Drop to the ground, take cover under a table or against a wall, and hold on.
- Hurricane: Go to a safe room or shelter, and stay away from windows and doors.
- Flood: Move to higher ground, and stay away from fast-moving water.
- Volcanic eruption: Stay indoors, wear a mask, and avoid ash fall-outs.
Remember, being prepared and knowing what to do can help you stay safe during natural hazards!
