184 - What is the difference between ionic and covalent bonds?

Imagine you have two friends who want to hold hands.

Ionic bonds are like holding hands very tightly, but using glue. In this type of bond, one friend (an atom) gives away something to the other friend (another atom), and in return, they both hold hands tightly together because of a strong connection. This usually happens between metals and non-metals.

Covalent bonds are like holding hands, but without glue. In this type of bond, two friends (atoms) hold hands together because they both share something (electrons) between them. This usually happens between non-metals.

So, in short, ionic bonds are like 'taking', and covalent bonds are like 'sharing'.
