1801 - What affects the appearance of igneous rock in terms of magma composition and cooling speed during formation?
Igneous rocks can look very different from each other. Two main factors that affect their appearance are:
Magma composition: The type of minerals present in the magma can change the color and texture of the rock. For example, rocks with lots of iron and magnesium are often dark-colored, while rocks with lots of silica are lighter-colored.
Cooling speed: The speed at which the magma cools also affects the rock's texture. If the magma cools slowly underground, there's time for big crystals to form, making the rock have a coarse texture. If it cools quickly above ground, the crystals don't have time to form, making the rock have a smooth or glassy texture.
