1518 - What are oxidation and reduction reactions
Imagine you have an apple, and you cut it. When it's exposed to air, it starts turning brown. This is because of a reaction called oxidation. Oxidation is when something gains oxygen, and that's what's happening to the apple.
On the other hand, reduction is the opposite. It's when something loses oxygen. Think of a big fire that's burning brightly. When you pour water on the fire, it starts to go out. This is because the oxygen is being taken away, so the fire is being reduced.
So, to summarize:
- Oxidation: Gain oxygen
- Reduction: Lose oxygen
These two reactions often happen together, which is why they're sometimes called "redox" reactions.
