1316 - What kinds of reactions may occur between different ions in aqueous solution.
There are three types of reactions that can occur between different ions in an aqueous solution:
Precipitation Reaction: When two ions combine to form a solid (or precipitate) that can't dissolve in water. For example, when silver ions (Ag+) mix with chloride ions (Cl-), they form a solid called silver chloride (AgCl).
Neutralization Reaction: When an acid ion (H+) reacts with a base ion (OH-) to form water (H2O). For example, when hydrogen ions (H+) mix with hydroxide ions (OH-), they form water (H2O).
Oxidation-Reduction (Redox) Reaction: When one ion loses or gains electrons, causing another ion to gain or lose electrons. For example, when copper ions (Cu2+) mix with zinc ions (Zn2+), the copper ions gain electrons and the zinc ions lose electrons.
These reactions can be complex and involving different types of ions, but they all follow the basic rules of chemistry.
