1207 - What are the classifications of matter based on physical separation methods?

There are 6 classifications of matter based on physical separation methods:

  1. Elements: Cannot be broken down into simpler substances (e.g. gold).
  2. Compounds: Can be broken down into simpler substances using a chemical reaction (e.g. water).
  3. Mixtures: Can be broken down into simpler substances using physical methods (e.g. sand and water).

Mixtures are further divided into: 4. Solutions (dissolved, can't see the separate parts, e.g. sugar in water). 5. Suspensions (can see the separate parts, e.g. mud in water). 6. Colloids (can't see the separate parts, but will settle eventually, e.g. milk).

These classifications help us understand the different types of matter.
