1055 - What is the function of our appendix?

For a long time, scientists didn't know what the appendix did. But now, we think it might have two main jobs:

  1. Helping with digestion: The appendix is connected to the large intestine and has lots of good bacteria in it. These bacteria help break down food and keep the digestive system healthy.

  2. Supporting our gut when we're young: Some scientists believe the appendix might also help the gut mature when we're babies. It's like a 'training' ground for the good bacteria that live in our tummies.

It's not a vital part of our body, like the heart or lungs, but it's still an important part of our digestive system.
